The Prophet’s ( صلّى اللّه عليه و آله و سلّم) first sermon in what is now Masjid Al-Jumu`ah, is:
The Praise, Thanks belongs to G’d, I praise HIM, I seek HIS assistance, I seek HIS forgiveness, I seek HIS guidance, I believe in HIM, I do not reject him, and I am opposed to whoever rejects him. I witness that there is no deity but G’d who is one without partners and that Muhammad is HIS servant and HIS messenger who was sent with the guidance, the light, exhortation against weakness just as the messengers [before], [at a time when there is] a scarcity of knowledge, misdirection amongst humanity, separation from time, nearness of the hour, and closeness of the account. Whoever obeys G’d and HIS messenger, certainly are rightly guided. However, whoever disobeys them, certainly is astray, lost, and thoroughly in error. I recommend to you to be regardful of G’d, for the best of what the Muslim can recommend to the Muslim is that he urges him pertaining to the hereafter and enjoins upon him to be regardful of G’d. Beware of what G’d has warned you concerning HIMSELF. There is nothing superior to that advice, and there is nothing superior to that reminder. Surely be regardful of G’d, for whoever works according it in apprehension and fear of his Lord, is a trustworthy aid to what you desire pertaining to the matters of the hereafter. Moreover, whoever sets aright what is between him and between G’d from his matters in secret and public, seeking nothing except the Face of G’d, will be remembered in this world, and will have a treasure in that which is after death. Then a man will have no need of that good which he has done previously; and for that which is otherwise, he will wish that there was a great distance between him and it. G’d warns you to beware of HIM, but G’d is kind to his servants. By HE who affirms HIS word, fulfills HIS promise, not differing in it, surely The Might and Sublime says: My word can not be changed, nor am I in the least unjust to the servants. [50:29] So be regardful of G’d in this world in your matters, in secret and public. Surely whoever is regardful of G’d, HE will cover his sins and give him a mighty reward. And whoever has regard for G’d, he will certainly have a mighty victory. And surely regard for G’d will ward off HIS trial, HIS punishment, and HIS wrath. And regard for G’d makes him blameless in HIS sight, will please the Lord, and will elevate him in degrees. Take hold of your portion, and do not be remiss in regards to G’d. Certainly G’d has caused you to know HIS book and has opened HIS path for you in order that HE may know those who speak the truth and those who lie. So act well just as G’d has acted well towards you, and be against what HE is against. And struggle in the cause of G’d which befits struggle for HIM. HE has chosen you and named you Muslims that he who is perishing might perish by a clear proof and he who is living might live by a clear proof. There is no power but with G’d. Increase the remembering G’d and act for the sake of what is after today. For he who sets aright what is between him and between G’d, G’d will take care of what is between him and between people. That is because G’d gives judgment upon people, but people can not give judgment upon HIM. And HE rules people, but they can not rule HIM. G’d is greater! There is no power except with G’d, the Mighty.
